As 2024 draws to a close, we decided to examine our predictions for the year to see how our crystal ball matches reality. 

In our article from earlier this year, we outlined four areas of interest during the year: AI, NIS2, MFA, and zero-trust. Let us see how our fortune-telling abilities turned out.

AI for good and bad

Nowadays, you can say that “AI will play a big role” and your prediction will be correct because we have seen numerous advancements, setbacks, and new features during the year.

In terms of the bad stuff, AI continues to be a rising concern. Phishing attempts, identity fraud, and attacks on cloud services have also continued to rise during the year. AI and cloud services have given rise to the reasonably new abbreviation CaaS, which stands for cybercrime-as-a-service, which is indeed worrying.

But as you know, AI is used for good as well. From our side, we have leveraged AI in our Authorization Robot that entered general availability earlier this year. It is a part of our IGA for SAP solution, where you can use AI to create or restructure your entire authorization concept in the best way possible.

NIS2 is the talk of the town

Unsurprisingly, NIS2 was the hot topic of the year, as the new EU regulation came into effect this October. But as with all regulations on this level, it will surely be a hot topic over the coming year as well.  

During the year, we have been hard at work detailing what this regulation means for you in practice in several webinars, expert talks, articles, and events.

Interest in this topic has been immense. In fact, we recently held a German webinar with a legal expert, during which attendees could ask questions about the regulation. The sheer number of questions has us considering doing it again to accommodate all of them. MFA, passwordless, and zero-trust

Of course, the technologies that enable compliance with the new regulation are a natural extension of the interest in NIS2. The NIS2 regulation especially mentions multi-factor authentication as a security measure among an increased risk awareness strategy. Assessment, awareness, and continuous improvement are also core parts of a zero-trust strategy, which has also been on the rise.

Speaking of MFA, enabling your users to identify themselves securely wherever they are and regardless of their device quickly leads to passwordless authentication. Because if there are no passwords to steal, there are no passwords to leak.

Overall, we would say we did pretty well in our predictions for 2024. Our only miss was that the plot from the movie Highlander II (set in 2024) did not play out, which is probably for the best anyway. 

Stay tuned, for just around the corner is 2025. It is a year that will bring new challenges and opportunities to all of us (and it is the year when we fight back against the kaiju invasion, at least according to the movie Pacific Rim, set in 2025).
