It can often feel like the world is spinning faster around us. Things are changing rapidly and on many levels, and it is understandable to feel dizzy.

On the other hand, change can ultimately be beneficial. It forces us to rethink old ways of doing things and can lead to improvements we did not consider before. In this article, we cover three areas where our reality has shifted over the last few years and how we could benefit from it.

1. The pandemic taught us to be swift

Virtually overnight, the COVID-19 pandemic changed our daily lives. For an extended period, we could not go to the office as usual. Working from home became the norm for many of us, even in organizations that used to be very focused on location.

Nowadays, many organizations are trying to find a balance between time in the office and the freedom to choose remote work where it fits. Employees are often happier, making them more inclined to stay at an employer, when they have the freedom to choose from where they do work and how it fits into their private life.

Today, there are no technological restrictions to letting employees work from the office, home, or anywhere else. Remote work can be made secure, with zero trust principles in place, even if an employee is not in the office. Their email can be securely synchronized to their own devices, filtering out sensitive content if needed. Their working experience can be channeled through user portals, giving them access to everything they need with the click of a button. Even if something goes wrong, like a device getting lost, there are robust solutions that ensure nothing gets into the wrong hands.

The pandemic showed us that remote work is entirely possible, and we should take advantage of it whenever possible.

2. Geopolitical changes teach us resiliency

The Russian invasion of Ukraine might not have come as a complete surprise. Still, overnight, European countries, along with many others, quickly responded with support for Ukraine and cut many ties with Russia. We also learned how cyber warfare is now a very tangible reality.

Because of this, organizations within the European Union have started to fast-track cybersecurity in many ways. This, along with regulations like NIS2 and DORA, increases the cybersecurity posture of many organizations and their partners. This is not just to avoid incidents by unfriendly nations but also to stay secure in a world where cyber attacks are becoming more commonplace.

The same goes for how we handle US technology now that the political climate is rapidly shifting. The changes have even led the data protection agencies in Norway and Denmark to advise organizations to have a plan B or exit strategy from vendors.

3. Evolving technology in a changing world

Over the last couple of years, AI has swept the world with many promises and just as many potential threats. Cybercriminals using AI for large-scale attacks have become increasingly common, highlighting the need for robust cybersecurity throughout the organization. At the same time, AI can be used for good in this space. Depending on the situation, it can provide better context-based security and save a lot of time when creating or adjusting authorization concepts.

The European Union regulations actually provide protection. The NIS2 and DORA directives heavily emphasize risk management and incident reporting, giving European organizations common ground to stand on. If we all work together to increase security, from large enterprises to small businesses, we all benefit, as your entire vertical becomes more secure.
